On September 3, 2024, Rev. Dr. Maisha I. Handy was named the 12th president of McCormick Theological Seminary, ushering in a new chapter of visionary leadership grounded in faith, scholarship, and service.

A Chicago native, Dr. Handy is a respected theologian, educator, and administrator whose work has long centered on formation, justice, and the transformative power of theological education. She makes history as McCormick’s first African American president and its second woman to lead the seminary.

Dr. Handy brings more than two decades of academic and executive leadership shaped by her 24-year tenure at the Interdenominational Theological Center (ITC) in Atlanta, where she served as Interim President and Professor of Religion and Education. Her presidency continues a lifelong commitment to preparing leaders who can engage the church, academy, and world with wisdom, courage, and hope.

Back Talk is Dr. Handy’s monthly web stream series exploring the intersections of theology, justice, leadership, and faith in action.

Each 30-minute episode features unfiltered conversations with thought leaders, changemakers, and prophetic voices from across the country.

These aren’t easy conversations — but they’re the ones that matter. And you’re invited to pull up a seat.

In the Public Square is a monthly reflection series featuring the voices of Dr. Handy alongside the faculty and leadership of McCormick Theological Seminary. Together, these contributors engage the spiritual, social, and ethical questions shaping our shared life, bringing theological insight into conversation with current events. The series invites readers to consider how faith informs public witness, justice, and the ongoing work of building communities grounded in hope, accountability, and transformation.
