Dr. Efraín Agosto is Visiting Professor of New Testament and Latinx Studies at McCormick Theological Seminary. A scholar of New Testament studies, Latinx theology and ministry, and biblical interpretation, his teaching and research explore the relationship between scripture, leadership, migration, culture, and the lived experiences of Latino/a communities.

Before joining McCormick, Dr. Agosto held several distinguished visiting appointments at Williams College, including the Bennett Boskey Distinguished Visiting Professorship in Latina/o Studies, the Croghan Bicentennial Professorship in Biblical and Early Christian Studies, and a visiting professorship in Latinx Studies and Religion. He previously served as Professor of New Testament Studies at New York Theological Seminary and as Professor of New Testament and Director of the Programa de Ministerios Hispanos at Hartford Seminary.

Dr. Agosto’s publications include Servant Leadership: Jesus and Paul (Chalice Press, 2005); the Spanish-language commentary 1 y 2 Corintios (Fortress Press, 2007); and Preaching in the Interim: Transitional Leadership in the Latino/a Church (Judson Press, 2018). With Jacqueline Hidalgo, he co-edited Latinxs, the Bible, and Migration (Palgrave, 2018). His current research, supported by the Louisville Institute, examines the religious foundations of the work of 20th-century Puerto Rican independence leader Pedro Albizu Campos.

Born and raised in New York City and deeply rooted in his Puerto Rican heritage, Dr. Agosto earned a BA from Columbia University, an MDiv from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, and a PhD in New Testament Studies from Boston University. He and his wife, Olga Gisela Rodríguez Agosto, live in West Hartford, Connecticut, and are the parents of two adult children. They are members of Casa de Adoración y Alabanza Iglesia del Pacto.
