Course description : This is a history course, not a course in apologetics or in theology. We trace the origins of Islam from a comparative perspective, examining aspects of Judaism and Christianity at the time of the birth of the Prophet, through the first centuries of Islam in its pre-history, emergence, expansion, development of scripture, and encounters with Jews, Christians, Manichaeans, Zoroastrians, and other diverse traditions, emerging and expanding down to the appearance of Salafism. A realistic time-budget for this short course (only six brief weeks) is 10-12 hours per week.
