In Memoriam: The Rev. Rubén Armendáriz

With gratitude and sorrow, the McCormick community gives thanks for the life and witness of The Rev. Rubén Armendáriz, former director of El Centro / Hispanic Ministries Program and a beloved teacher, mentor, and colleague, who died on Thanksgiving night in San Antonio, Texas. We hold his wife, Dr. Cynthia Díaz de León, Ph.D., and all who loved him in our prayers.
“Rubén taught us that the gospel is lived in two languages: the language of love and the language of justice,” says Rev. Dr. Leslie Díaz-Pérez, Director of El Centro. “He trained leaders who preached with heart and organized with courage—so that the Church could better serve God’s people in every neighborhood and beyond.”
A LIFE FORMED FOR SERVICE
Born in Austin, Texas, to a Presbyterian pastor, Rev. Armendáriz grew up across southern Texas, California, and Arizona as his father served the Church. After graduating from Menaul School in 1949, he served in the United States Navy until 1954. He then returned to Austin, earning a Bachelor of Arts from The University of Texas at Austin and a Master of Divinity from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary. Ordained in 1961, he began a ministry that would bridge communities, traditions, and generations.
A BUILDER OF LEADERS AT MCCORMICK
From 1975 to 1991, Rev. Armendáriz served at McCormick Theological Seminary as Professor of Ministry, Director of the Hispanic Ministries Program (El Centro), and later Vice President for Seminary Operations and Relations. Through El Centro, he championed the formation of Latina/o/x ministers and the bilingual, bicultural leadership the Church needs. His classroom and his counsel shaped pastors, chaplains, and community leaders who continue to serve across the country and beyond.
MINISTRY ACROSS TRADITIONS AND COMMUNITIES
Rev. Armendáriz’s pastoral and organizational leadership spanned the wider Church. He served as the organizing pastor of Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church in Dallas; as Priest-in-Charge at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church in Corpus Christi; on the staff of Presbytery del Salvador; and as Executive Director of the Hispanic American Institute in Austin. A gifted educator, he also taught as a visiting or adjunct professor at the Episcopal Seminary of the Southwest, Austin Seminary, and McCormick—always centering ministry that meets people where they are.
RETURNING HOME TO TEXAS
In 1991, Rev. Armendáriz returned to Texas to pastor Divine Redeemer Presbyterian Church in San Antonio, later continuing to serve the regional church as a church development consultant for Mission Presbytery. Whether in a parish, a classroom, or a presbytery office, his ministry bore the same marks: courage, hospitality, and a steady commitment to justice and pastoral care.
GRATITUDE AND HOPE
We give thanks to God for the life of this faithful and prophetic servant. Rev. Armendáriz taught generations of students to preach with clarity, to lead with humility, and to love God’s people in two languages and many contexts. His legacy lives on in the ministries he nurtured, the leaders he mentored, and the communities he helped to flourish.
We invite alumni, colleagues, and friends to share memories and tributes that celebrate Rev. Armendáriz’s life and impact. May the peace of Christ surround all who mourn, and may we honor his memory by continuing the work to which he gave his life.
A funeral service will be held at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 1761 Northwest Loop 410, San Antonio, TX 78213, at 2 pm, on Saturday, December 13.
Con el corazón apretado pero agradecido, en McCormick despedimos a el Rev. Rubén Armendáriz, querido maestro, mentor y colega, quien partió la noche de Acción de Gracias en San Antonio, Texas. Fue ex-director de El Centro/Programa de Ministerios Hispánicos, y su huella queda entre nosotros. Acompañamos en oración a su esposa, la Dra. Cynthia Díaz de León, Ph.D., y a toda su familia.

UNA VIDA FORJADA PARA EL SERVICIO
Nacido en Austin, Texas, hijo de un pastor presbiteriano, el Rev. Armendáriz creció en el sur de Texas, California y Arizona mientras su padre servía a la Iglesia. Tras graduarse de la Menaul School en 1949, sirvió en la Marina de los Estados Unidos hasta 1954. Luego regresó a Austin, donde obtuvo el Bachillerato en The University of Texas at Austin y la Maestría en Divinidad en el Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary. Ordenado en 1961, inició un ministerio que tendería puentes entre comunidades, tradiciones y generaciones.
UN FORMADOR DE LÍDERES EN MCCORMICK
De 1975 a 1991, el Rev. Armendáriz sirvió en el Seminario Teológico McCormick como Profesor de Ministerio, Director del Programa de Ministerios Hispánicos (El Centro) y más tarde Vicepresidente de Operaciones y Relaciones del Seminario. A través de El Centro, promovió la formación de ministros latinos/as/x y el liderazgo bilingüe y bicultural que la Iglesia necesita. Su aula y su acompañamiento moldearon a pastores, capellanes y líderes comunitarios que siguen sirviendo en todo el país y más allá.
MINISTERIO A TRAVÉS DE TRADICIONES Y COMUNIDADES
El liderazgo pastoral y organizacional del Rev. Armendáriz abarcó la Iglesia en su sentido más amplio. Sirvió como pastor organizador de la Iglesia Presbiteriana Good Shepherd en Dallas; como sacerdote a cargo en la Iglesia Episcopal St. Martin’s en Corpus Christi; en el personal del Presbiterio del Salvador; y como director ejecutivo del Hispanic American Institute en Austin. Docente talentoso, también enseñó como profesor visitante o adjunto en el Seminario Episcopal del Suroeste, el Austin Seminary y McCormick—siempre centrando un ministerio que encuentra a las personas allí donde están.
DE REGRESO A TEXAS
En 1991, el Rev. Armendáriz regresó a Texas para pastorear la Iglesia Presbiteriana Divine Redeemer en San Antonio, y posteriormente continuó sirviendo a la iglesia regional como consultor de desarrollo de iglesias para el Presbiterio Misión. Ya fuera en una parroquia, en el aula o en la oficina de un presbiterio, su ministerio llevó siempre las mismas marcas: valentía, hospitalidad y un compromiso firme con la justicia y el cuidado pastoral.
GRATITUD Y ESPERANZA
Damos gracias a Dios por la vida de este siervo fiel y profético. El Rev. Armendáriz enseñó a generaciones de estudiantes a predicar con claridad, a liderar con humildad y a amar al pueblo de Dios en dos idiomas y en muchos contextos. Su legado perdura en los ministerios que nutrió, en los líderes que mentoreó y en las comunidades que ayudó a florecer.
Invitamos a exalumnos, colegas y amistades a compartir recuerdos y homenajes que celebren la vida e impacto del Rev. Armendáriz. Que la paz de Cristo rodee a quienes lamentan su partida, y que honremos su memoria continuando la obra a la que entregó su vida.
