A PUBLIC TRUTH-TELLING PROCESS
ROOTED IN HUMAN DIGNITY
January 21 - 22, 2026
The HART (Human Rights, Anti-Authoritarianism, Reparatory and Restorative) Truth Telling Commission is a two-day series of public hearings elevating lived testimony and documenting human-rights harms facing communities of color amid the federal militarization of neighborhoods. The hearings will create a lasting public record through transcripts and video.
Testimony will address the real harms communities are experiencing, including family separation, detention, workplace and home raids, fear-based policing, and lasting trauma. This record will support education, accountability, and remedy—so the truth is not only heard, but preserved and acted upon.
“When enforcement is militarized, harm becomes policy…because human dignity is not negotiable.”
— Dr. Iva E. Carruthers, Director, McCormick’s Center for Reparatory Justice, Transformation and Remediation (CRJTR)

What happens in Chicago matters everywhere. These hearings represent Phase 1 of a national process aimed at telling the story, curating community truth, and mobilizing voices as a critical step of resistance amid threats to democracy.
The HART Truth Telling Commission is part of a broader Truth Telling & Harm Documentation Commission model facilitated through partnership between McCormick’s Center for Reparatory Justice, Transformation and Remediation (CRJTR) — which focuses on advancing reparatory justice, aiming to address systemic racism and historical injustices, and the Samuel DeWitt Proctor Conference. — nurtures, sustains and mobilizes the African American faith community to address human rights and social justice.
Together, this work documents testimony, develops recommendations for remedy, and strengthens a national alliance prepared to hold the United States accountable to universal human rights standards.
